Anise Hot Water Cake

1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup lard
Pinch salt
1 egg
1 TB anise
1 tsp soda dissolved in 1 cup boiling water
2 cups flour
1/2 cup molasses

Bake 350° for 30 minutes.
Top with powdered sugar.
